Friday Mail!

I realize many out there are reading this blog from remote corners of the globe.....from internet cafes in Nepal, train stations in Moscow, research outposts in Antarctica and double-wides in Moberly.  And to such far-flung individuals, I say, welcome, but sit tight and be patient - because I have to offer up some local news for this weekend before we get to Friday Mail.

1)  Saturday, August 21 @ 7:30 AM:  The 18th Annual Missouri River Festival of the Arts Bike Tour.  The designated 42 mile course rolls through rural Cooper and Moniteau Counties.  However, you don't have a hair on your butt (as my father would say) unless you do the 10 mile additional Lupus Loop.  If you've never done the Lupus Loop before, get your granny gear dusted off, because it's a little hilly.  But here's a little warning - it's not the Lupus hill itself that is the worst, but the one after that.  Registration opens at 6:00 AM the day of the ride at Thespian Hall, 522 Main Street, Booneville.

2) Saturday August 21 @ 3-4:00 PM:  The Boone Dawdle Ride begins leaving from Shiloh Bar and Grill.  More info here.  Big props go out to Cyclextreme for offering up some great raffle prizes, but also hosting a bike clinic in the parking lot of Shiloh's from 2 to 3:00 PM to help get your ride ready for the leisurely cruise up the trail.

3) Saturday August 21 @ 6:15 PM:  Missouri State Track Championships at Penrose Velodrome in Penrose Park, St. Louis.  More info here.

And mark your calendars for NEXT SUNDAY evening, August 29th.

Columbia's very fist Cycle Chic Sunday ride is going down from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  Bust out your nappy duds and your cruisers for a 5 mile tour through downtown COMO starting at Flat Branch Park.  This is a great opportunity for COMO cyclists to unite (whether you are a polo player, a roadie, fixie-loving hipster, a CX or MTB afficianado, recreational cyclist or hard core commuter) and show the community how many of us there are.....and how damned good we look. If you are unfamiliar with Cycle Chic Sunday concept, check this out.
Now onto the mail!

Dear PooBah,
From the things you write about, I'm guessing you consider yourself a "roadie" which probably means that you ride in ridiculously tight clothes.  I just cannot conceive of this.  When I ride to work in the morning, I have to be wearing loose fitting clothes, and prefer my favoirte pair of jeans and flannel shirt. Here's a photo of me riding to my office just yesterday morning.
I think most of the ire invoked by the community toward cyclists probably stems from individuals like yourself wearing your embarassing tight pants!  Nobody wants to see that....
Thanks for considering-
Charlie T.

Charlie-
Haters gonna hate.....but I so smell the faint aroma of denial about you....

Dear PooBah,
I was out riding the other evening when a deer jumped out of the woods along the roadside and ran in front of me.  We very nearly collided which scared me to death.  It could have killed me.  It occured to me that as cyclists, we don't often ride very defensively when it comes to encountering wildlife on the road.  Therefore, I've decided to offer a clinic about "Rural Riding" during which one of the exercises will involve what to do when encountering a large, antlered mammal.  We'll start by practicing with deer stand-ins at first...what do you think?  Can I sign you up as a participant?
Cindy G.
Cindy,
I really applaud you taking the initiative in starting a course like this....clearly it's much needed.  Just one question - is the thong part of your clinic's dress code?  You might want to send an invitation to Charlie, above.

Dear PooBah,
Let me preface this letter by explaining that I am an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering here at the University.  My comments are regarding the strength assessment of different race wheelsets.  So much has been written about which modality of mechanical testing is most appropriate for bicycle wheels....ie should they be tested in compression, in bending, in tension, etc.  From an engineering standpoint, it's a very complex issue.  Furthermore, materials testing machines can be very expensive to own and operate.  As you know, in these difficult economic times, it can be challenging to justify to the University the purchase of such expensive equipment.  However, I think I may have developed a much less expensive, and equally accurate, method of determining the strength and stiffness of various wheelsets that involves the use of two of my PhD students.  Please note that prior to testing, both students donned protective eyeware to prevent accidental injury subsequent to unexpected catastrophic failure.  I've photographed the mechanical testing process and submit this for your review.
Yours,
Dr. Thomas Pascoe

Dr. Pascoe,
I might direct you to the University's policies regarding research ethics.....in addition to the odd bicycle spoke, there might be a few rules being bent by your lab as well.  At any rate, I'm sure this photograph will help you get your forthcoming manuscript through the peer-review process in a speedy fashion.  Best of luck.

Dear PooBah,
Thank you so much for posting my story about booting a tire with a Red Bud Leaf last week. It was nice to finally look at your blog and find a post worth reading. Maybe with a little help from your friends, this little hobby of yours might become bearable to the CoMo cycling scene. And with that, I would like to seek your advice. Recently, while taking a break from dominating the popular World of Warcraft (W.O.W.) video game, I came across the following video.

My question is this: Which niche sport do you think the opposite sex finds most attractive and why? I've been really lonely lately and am thinking of switching sports from cycling to something else. Do you think taking off my flamboyantly colored lycra and taking up the YoYo would increase my chances with the ladies? I have to admit, I've never received any action purely because I'm a cyclist. In fact, I'm starting to wonder if it's a repellent. Of course, they could just be intimidated by the fact that I am a level 80 Gnome Warlock in W.O.W.
Buck Russell

Buck,
Great question!  I do think you should consider a switch in niche sports that would encompass all of your skills....like the fighting prowess you've developed playing W.O.W., your communicative abilities so eloquently demonstrated in your letters to me, and most importantly, the fierce intensity which which I'm sure you compete on the bike.  Combining all of these attributes into a sport will no doubt attract the ladies.  After doing much research, I've concluded that the following sport is your calling.

In fact, the women will likely be crawling all over you with such ferocity once they observe you pull this move out in Room 38, that you may find yourself forced to employ the "magazine of death"  on a few of them as well.  Make sure you have a copy of Ladies' Home Journal with you before you go out....oh wait, I'm sure you always do already.

Thanks for reading and sending in your letters!  Have a good weekend.

Friday Mail: Of racing, art and impending nudity

We start this morning with a little rundown on some local racing.  This weekend finds the Tour de Grove in St. Louis, which is the highest paying single-day race in Missouri.  The NRC premier races will be held on Sunday, but new this year are crits and night street sprints to be held on Saturday.  Follow the link for more information.  And in conjunction with the Tour is Art Crank St. Louis, an exhibit of cycling posters created by local artists to be held at the Atomic Cowboy.  This is a fantastic way to feed a starving artist and get some amazing cycling-related art, like this!

I'm really excited about this, as I've been needing another bike inspired piece of art to compliment my newly purchased oil painting of a serene, yet pensive, Tom Boonen:

I just love this painting.  There is something so angelic about Tommeke here.....his eyes seem to follow me all over COMO CYCO headquarters - no matter where I go.

And speaking of St. Louis, remember that you only have one more week to decide what you are going to wear for the 2010 World Naked Bike Ride to be held in St. Louis on June 19th!  Here was last year's poster for the event which illustrates a giant headless naked woman who is apparently in the act of dismounting her unicycle so that she can dry hump the St. Louis arch.

Being the cultivator of a blog that occasionaly shows a scantily clad woman or two astride bicycles, I certainly am not one to criticize about how female cyclists should be portrayed, but is anyone else somewhat disturbed by the fact that the artist of the aforementioned poster chose to draw the naked woman sans head?  Perhaps this year's Naked Ride organizers could meet up with some of the Art Crank artists for a new marketing strategy.

At any rate, I am happy to bring you this week's reader mail.  Have a great weekend!

Dear PooBah,
Writing you from Nottingham, UK!  I know this is a cycling blog, but were you aware that England will be playing the US in world cup football on Saturday?  Prepare to have your collective bums thoroughly whipped!  By the way, thought you might appreciate a picture of me on my bike!
Cheerio!
Ian

Ian,
Sweet Moulton.  I especially like what you've done with the twin-mounted bottles on the saddle.  It kind of makes it look like you have a little jet pack on your seat.  By the way, I may be mistaken, but it looks like Dr. Who just landed in the woods behind you...better scurry along before he thinks you are representative of cycling culture all over the planet.

Dear PooBah,
I am a huge advocate for commuting to work by bike and try to encourage those around me to do the same; so much so that I frequently let the people I work with take my bike out to run errands.  However I get sick of seeing the paint job of my vintage road frame nicked and scratched from my co-workers not practicing safe cycling.  So I wrapped the entire thing with old inner tubes.  Do you think this will provide enough protection?
Thanks!
Jerry T.

Jerry,
Wow great idea.  It's kind of like a condom for your bike....just don't forget the higher contact areas that are really at risk....the saddle and the handlebars.  No need to risk exposing them either!

Better yet, why don't you just get one of these for the office?

Dear PooBah,
I recently had a bad crash on my bike which really deformed the rear fender.  I thought it was trashed but was surprisingly able to bend it back into shape by squeezing it between my thighs.  I just thought I would pass the tip along to your readers in case they found themselves in the same predicament!
Yours
Mary M.

Mary,
Great tip!  Thanks a bunch.  By the way - it looks like you smeared a little grease in your cleavage by accident...or is that a tattoo...or is it hair?  Ummmm...nevermind.  By the way - be careful of those spot-welded stamped drop outs you've jammed into your stays....I'm not sure of the weight-rating on something like that, but....ummmm.... nevermind.  Good luck with the repairs!

Dear PooBah,
I've been thinking of joining the CBC (Columbia Bike Club) race team but stumbled upon this photo on their website which has me a little worried....I'm not sure I would fit in?
Advice?
Bruce J.

Bruce-
This photo is a little misleading and shouldn't concern or intimidate you.  You don't have to ride carbon deep dish wheels to be on CBC.

Good luck to all the folks racing in St. Louis this weekend....be safe!

Friday Mail

Friday is here again and is supposed to be bringing with it some sunshine and hot weather for the weekend and the 2010 Missouri State Championship Road Race on Sunday, May 23rd in St. Genevieve.  And, you've got one more week to prepare for the Pedaler's Jamboree weekend bicycle and music festival which begins next weekend.  Everyone keep thinking happy thoughts for good weather so that the campground in Booneville will be dried out by next Saturday night...otherwise, we're all going to have swamp-ass come Sunday morning for a long ride home.

And after a drama-filled week in pro racing, I think we are most certainly ready for some Friday mail!

Dear PooBah-
I was really excited to see 'Pippo' Pozzato take a stage win in the Giro yesteday.  As you know, Pozzato is very religious and also very tattooed and even has the words "Only God Can Judge Me" written across his back.
I've noticed that relgious-themed tattoos are not uncommon in the peloton.  But I'm curious - do you have a favorite?
Yours-
Michael S.

Michael-
Well.....rumor has it that the Tour de France devil (Dedi Senft) has a rather un-holy tattoo himself....I cannot confirm that this is it, but an inverted cross made out of strips of bacon over his ass-crack wouldn't be that far of a stretch - eh?

Dear PooBah,
I hear that the current bearer of the Maglia Rosa in the Giro, Saxo Bank's Richie Porte, actually has a cranium that is 60% larger than the average human head.  Do you think this is even possible?
Thanks!
Albert G.

Dear Albert,
It would certainly explain something I witnessed at the jersey ceremony yesterday...I just hope they allowed his mom to have a C-section when he was born.

Dear PooBah,
I just built myself a seatless fixie as a training bike to increase my leg strength.  But going downhill is a little risky....especially when I try to maintain an aero position that will also protect me against the risk of 'endo-ing.'  Can you take a look at my position on the bike and tell me if you think this will work?
Thanks so much
Charles D.

Chuck-
Three words, dude....imminent scrote burn.....
I also see that you're not wearing a helmet....is this the reason?

Dear PooBah,
The 2012 Summer Olympics are just around the corner in my home town of London!  I'm so excited, I can hardly stand it.  With the new emergence of so many British cycling phenoms (like Cavendish) to hit the scene, I think we really have a chance to clean up on our own home turf.  What do you think?
Cheers!
Alistair G.

Alistair,
I've been trying to keep up with the forthcoming Olympic news, and honestly couldn't agree more with your predictions of the UK cycling squad's chances.  After all, the recently unveiled mascots for the Britain-based games are giant one-eyed monsters....which fit perfectly with Cav's persona.

Dear PooBah,
I just got myself a Surly Cross Check to try cyclocross this season.  I've been practicing my mounts and dismounts, but am damn sore in the groinal region.  Do you have any advice?
Thanks
Jasper K.

Jasper,
I'm definitely not the right man to be asking - since I too will be a complete cross newb this year. But right off the bat, I might suggest trying some shorts that were NOT part of your 7th grade basketball team's uniform from 1984.

Dear PooBah,
I recently took a bad spill on my mountain bike and scraped up my hip a little bit. But my tush really took the brunt of the fall.  I took a bunch of photos of the damage and am enclosing one for your review....Do you think these will leave scars?
Thanks!
Laura C.

Laura-
Hmmmm.  Tough to say.  I know the other pictures may be pretty gruesome to see - but you better send them to me so I can make a better assessment.

Have a great weekend everyone.  Ride safe.

Friday Mail! Unitards galore!

I like to give Mark Cavendish (aka the Manx Missile) what some may call "the business" from time to time.  I have chosen to do so because of his history of being rather bragadocious......which is not a made up Mary Poppins word, but actually means acting like a cocky prick....which may be a redundant redundant definition now that I think of it.  At any rate, last week, I was feeling a little guilty because of this interview in which Cavs admits to having a bit of a rough season for a variety of reasons.  And some of these are really legitimate things.  If you are worried about Cavendish, fear not....I think the storms have passed.  My evidence?  Firstly his new collaboration with PRO accessory manufacturers in the creation of a line of handlebars and stems.  Especially slick is the logo each is adorned with.
Logo artistic licenses include lack of dental work and 20inch wheels.

Apparently "The Manx Missile" is not happy with his nickname, thus has assumed the new moniker of "Master of Faster" which is written under his name vertically on the logo. It doesn't really roll off the tongue that well and should not be confused with this: The Master Blaster, from Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome.
But much like the Master portion of the couple called Master Blaster, Cavs is only as good as his lead out man (the Blaster), which yesterday was Mark Renshaw.  Renshaw did an amazing job of delivering Cavs to the end of Stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie, which he took in the sprint finish, flourishing a unique gesture to the fans as he crossed the line in first.  This leads me to the second piece of evidence that the old Cavs is back.....attitude and all.
Welcome back, Cavs.  The peloton was feeling a little too classy in your absence.  I bet the sponsors love it too!

Lance Armstrong is buddy-buddy with Cavs, but is currently busy racing in the Tour of Gila, making babies, and drinking Michelob Ultra.....but if he wasn't, I wonder what he would have to say about Cav's two-finger salute?

In other more relevant and local news....Tomorrow is the kick off of the Bike, Walk and Wheel Week here in COMO.  Join up with former mayor Darwin Hindman in Flat Branch Park at 11:00 AM for the Young at Heart Bike Ride, and then at 1:00 PM, check out a bike equipment expo, swap meet and Bike Polo match.  I have it on good authority there will be a pedal powered smoothie maker and root beer bar bike there as well.  More details can be found here.

And with that - I bring you Friday Mail!

Dear Poobah

Love your blog!! Allow me to geek out for a second. I have thought a lot about Wonder Woman and her invisible jet. I wonder if she misplaces the keys to the invisible jet can she find them? Are the keys invisible too? So I did some research **** warning geeek alert****, it seems Wonder Woman's Jet is actually an intelligent being from a different plane of existence. It takes on the form of an invisible jet and communicates with Wonder Woman telepathically in her world of existence. Which unfortunately isn't my world of existance :( I have always wanted to find a super hero type of lady dressed in a tight singlet willing to tie me up with a golden lasso that makes me only tell the truth.....I guess there is always craigslist ???

Aaro That Crazy Gotcha Guy

Aaro-
Thanks for your note!  You shouldn't give up hope - in doing a quick search online I've already come up with 4 possible candidates that could make your dreams come true:

Bachelorette #1:  Sara is a 3rd grade school teacher from Walla Walla, has a thing for Wonder Woman and also loves to knit outfits for her bike.  What a combo!

Bachelorette #2: Here's Janice, a police officer from Dayton.  Tight singlet? Check.  Golden Lasso? Check.  But heads up - she's also got the bullet proof wrist cuffs....don't get caught in the crossfire!

Bachelorette #3: Next up: Pat, a hair dresser from Starkville, Mississippi.  She may be a little hairier than what you were bargaining for - but hey, pickers can't be choosers.

Bachelorette #4:  And lastly, meet Maude, a meat inspector from St. Paul.  This is the one for you, my friend.  I just feel it.  She doesn't have a bike - but think of the fun you will have teaching her how to ride!

Dear PooBah
I love mountain biking, but have a horrible fear of ticks.  Now that summer is almost here - I'm terrified to go back into the woods - I just know that there will be a ravenous horde of them waiting for me.  Therefore, instead of wearing my normal cycling kit this summer, I've invented a tick-proof suit I'm going to be sporting.  I'm thinking of trying to market this.
It comes with black stilettos - good for stabbing the little bastards if you see one on the trail.
What do you think?
Kathy C.

Kathy,
Do you happen to have a golden lasso?  Would you be interested in meeting someone named "Aaro, That Crazy Gotcha Guy?"

Dear PooBah
What do you think about spinning?  I think this is a much safer way to get just as good a workout as being out on the road or some twisty trail on a bicycle.
Colin M.
Colin,
I understand that you might feel safer spinning in place, but real cyclists must not only be concerned with their own safety - but that of those around them as their actions can have certain repercussions.  You are no exception just because you are stationary.   Think of the well-being of everyone around you, man....

Dear PooBah,
I am looking for my cycling soul mate, but have been unable to find her.....Therefore, I have decided to create a virtual cycling partner that I ride with in Second Life.  I've named her Melissa.  Would you like to join us for a virtual ride sometime?
Charles L.

Charles,
Thanks so much for the invitation - I really appreciate it.  I have to admit being fairly ignorant to the whole virtual reality thing of Second Life, so have done a little research and stumbled upon your profile there.  I think you and Melissa will make a really great couple!

Dear PooBah.....

Aw screw it....I couldn't come up with anything for this picture - I just couldn't end a Friday post with Charles L. and his apple-tard.

Have a great weekend everyone - see you all at the Bike, Walk and Wheel Week kickoff tomorrow!

Special Weekend Edition

First off, I want to apologize for the lack of regular posts the past couple of days.  I received several emails asking if I'd run away to join the circus, and although I've had the notion many, many times, unfortunately, the "wolf-boy" gig has already been taken....so I'm afraid I would be perceived as just a cheap knock-off.
And I would hate to be thought of as someone who tries to mimic anyone.  Incidentally, the reason I've been away from COMO CYCO headquarters has to do with the fact that I'm occasionaly mistaken for the wolf-boy.....This past Thursday morning, I awoke, like most other days, brimming with excitement to be starting another fulfilling day at my job.  But, upon entering my bathroom to brush my face, I looked into the mirror and  immediately noticed that something was awry.....badly.  When I finally realized what was going on, chills went down my spine. Somehow in the middle of the night, someone or something had shaved what appeared to be a pattern of tiny crop circles into my chest hair.  I quickly went online and discovered that this is not a new phenomenon.

I've still not yet determined either the significance or the culprit behind all of this, but I'm actually worried that the COMO CYCO dog is to blame and may be trying to establish a runway for his canine martian brethren upon my torso.
Thoroughly freaked, I spent the next two days at home, in bed, eating Cheeze-its.  Alien dogs hate Cheeze-its.  But I finally emerged from my lair this morning - alien dogs be damned.

In other news, this weekend should prove to be an exciting one as tomomrrow is Liege-Bastogne-Liege.  Last years' champion, Andy Schleck will be trying to take the win again, with the help of his brother.  I wonder if they can make it a two-fer? Damn those Schleck boys are cool.
At any rate - today I bring you your weekly installment of Friday Mail....on Saturday!  Enjoy!

Dear PooBah,
I am a huge Harry Potter fan and have read all the books twice.  One of my favorite parts of the stories is the quidditch matches, where all the characters ride around on brooms.  I thought this was so cool, that I've invented my own quidditch broom bike!  You actually steer the bike with the broom handle.  Do you think I can catch the golden snitch with this?
Yours
Ronald W.

Ronald,
I don't know about any snitch, but you're certainly at risk for catching a scrotum full of splinters.  Be careful on this one.

Dear PooBah,
I think that the reason so many cyclists get hit by cars while riding is because the clothes they tend to wear are too flashy.  Motorists have gotten too acclimated to seeing the average multi-colored cyclist riding about town.  I think if we become more difficult to see, then drivers will be forced to look for us harder, thus raising their awareness of our presence.  This is called reverse psychology.  Thus, I've invented an "invisible bicycle".  I think this could be huge, and was hoping you could endorse it and help me spread the word.  Thanks!
George T.
P.S. Check out my invisible rain gear, as well :)

George,
Well done, dude.  I'm not sure this ride will be any safer, but I have to say, you've really made me think about the esthetics of transportation.  Your bike is very reminiscent of Wonder Woman's preferred method of transportation: an invisible jet.  But because she did not become invisible when riding in the jet, it really served no stealth purpose, as people could still see her inside of it, oddly flying through the air in a sitting position.
Thus, the creators of Wonder Woman must have made her jet transparent not to serve any real purpose, but rather so we, the pre-pubescent, and yet still, highly impressionable young male viewers, had the opportunity to gawk at Lynda Carter in her WW uniform floating around in space.
Whereas I used to love to see Wonder Woman floating around, the sight of you riding along in mid air makes me inexplicably angry which has led me to the conclusion that for some reason, I think you deserve as ass-whooping, and I would like to see it delivered to you by Lynda Carter, but I don't know exactly why.  Anyway - if you can arrange that, I would be happy to endorse your bike.  Good luck with that.

Dear PooBah
Check out the sweet ride I pimped for the annual Puerto Rican celebration parade!  I even put a small figurine of a famous Puerto Rican idol on a special handlebar mount!
Yours,
Herve J.
Herve,
No idea, had I, that Puerto Rican Yoda is!

Dear PooBah,
Do you have any idea what  Alessandro Petacchi and Fabio Sabatini are doing in this picture?
Paul S.
Paul,
Like many young lovers relaxing in parks around the world this spring, I wonder if they are playing that old children's game of pretending that the clouds are taking certain shapes.....Sabatini says, "Oh Ale-jet, that one looks just like Cadel Evan's chin!"  "No," says Petacchi, "that's Boonen's ass!"

Dear PooBah-
Other than Megadeth, do you have any other favorite cycling-related music you like to listen to?
Thanks!
Marilyn S.

Marilyn-
Well I really like the album "Bicycle" by HR.  There something about the dude with zombie eyes towing a tethered crane with his bicycle as a small boy in red pajamas weeps that is surreal, and yet emblamatic of cycling culture today.  Somedays, I'm the crane......some days I'm the little boy.
Then there is a great kayaoke album by "The Barefoot Man".  Track one is especially good - "I wish I were your bicycle seat."  Oh the number of times I've had this same desire....it speaks to me.
But I think my favorite has to be "Nipples" by Cartoon Boyfriend.  The album cover depicts three naked men riding a bike built only for one.  I'm not sure how fellow's #2 and #3 are remaining suspended in mid air, unless......oh.....never mind.

Dear PooBah-
I read today that Ivan Basso's sister Elisa is being charged with selling illegal drugs.  Many of her assets have already been consumed in trying to fight the allegations swirling around her involvement in the same doping ring that brought her brother down four years ago.  This is going to prove to be a very lengthy and expensive court case.  Do you think she has the money to afford all of this?
Jerry T.

Jerry -
Well, she knows how to turn a quick dime.....she's done it before.

Thanks for reading everyone - enjoy your weekend!
